Bond was set Thursday morning at 10 percent of $100,000 for the man arrested Wednesday night shortly after the armed robbery of a Council Bluffs Walgreens. Police say he's been linked to other recent metro robberies.

So far, 24-year-old Matthew Koval of Council Bluffs has only been charged with the robbery at East Broadway and Frank Street. A preliminary hearing will be held in July.

One of the detectives assigned to conduct surveillance at several businesses in the wake of the rash of holdups and attempted holdups in Council Bluffs, Omaha and Carter Lake spotted the suspect entering the store just before 10 p.m. and ran after him as he fled. After catching Koval, the stolen cash and a pellet gun were recovered.

Bobette Wickman, who lives nearby, saw the commotion. "I came out, and the cop was right here. I said, 'What happened? Someone die?' They said, 'No, we have somebody in custody.'"

So why do police say it is Koval involved in so many robberies? In each of the cases, police say the suspect acted the same way, and wore the same things, like nylons over his face.

Council Bluffs Police Sgt. Chad Meyers says, "His clothing description, just the way he went about committing the robberies, the weapons that were used, and we were able to recover those as well, and it's all consistent with what we've got on video."

Wickman is glad the suspect is behind bars, especially after seeing police pull the gun out of the bag the suspect left behind. "Well I'm glad they caught him, and the cops were right on the spot, and did their jobs. They did a good job," she says.

serial robber

On Tuesday, WOWT 6 News discovered a quirk in the kind of money he’s after.

Just after midnight on Monday a robber with pantyhose on his head ordered a customer to his knees at a Council Bluffs Eddy's on East Broadway.

The customer offered his wallet but the robber said, “I don't want your money. I want theirs," in reference to the convenience store.

For some reason, those who have seen the robber in action, say he targets company money and doesn't wait for the place to be clear of customers.

In fact, customers expecting to hand over their wallets or lose their valuables haven’t lost anything. He makes a point of not taking customers’ cash.

At a Speedee Mart the robber hit, a customer had $20 on the counter waiting to pay his bill. The thief didn’t take the customer’s money. Instead he went for the cash drawer with a suspected beef against business.

Council Bluffs Police call him "reckless" and "brazen" and "dangerous."

Sgt. Dave Dawson said, “Every place he's been, he's displayed a gun."

No one yet understands why he has targeted some hotels. Few hotels deal in cash.
