Alcohol, Excessive Speed Factors In Crash

Omaha police say "alcohol and excessive speed" were contributing factors in a crash that put a teenager in the hospital with life-threatening injuries Saturday morning.

Investigators say a driver was speeding southbound on 72nd Street when he ran a red light at the intersection with Grover Street shortly after midnight.

His car slammed into the driver's side door of another car, which then crashed into a third car waiting to turn westbound onto Grover.

The driver of the second vehicle, 18-year-old Michael Tran of Omaha, was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The driver who allegedly went through the red light, 21-year-old Sergio Valdivia-Maquez of Omaha, was taken to NMC with injuries to his legs. The other driver was not injured.

"At this point alcohol is believed to be, possibly be a factor in the accident," said OPD Sgt. Charles Ott. Charges are pending against Valdivia-Marquez.
