Residents of a lake community in eastern Nebraska say a proposed expansion to a food composting operation will create a stinky problem.
Residents of Horseshoe Lake opposed the plan Tuesday during a preliminary hearing with the Cass County Board of Commissioners. The group later tabled action, saying they would research the issue.
The expansion in an area along the Platte River would accept food waste from Gretna Public Schools and possibly the Lincoln and Omaha school districts.
Some neighbors say the expansion could produce odors and harm tourism. A Horseshoe Lake representative says special zoning guidelines protect the area.
The composting operation's owner says the proposal aims to reuse all of the Gretna school district's waste instead of sending it to a landfill.
