State and local agencies announced better than expected news Thursday concerning levels of lead at a city park in Plattsmouth. Soil samples were taken from areas at Rhylander Park. One small area about the size of a half acre was found to have lead at levels that will require more investigation.
That area has been fenced off. It is situated between two softball fields and includes a trail that leads to a residential area.
However, elevated lead levels were not found in the parks ball fields, soccer fields, picnic or playground areas. So, those areas have been declared no threat to people using the park.
The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality will have a contractor take additional samples from the half acre area to determine the extent that soil needs to be removed and replaced. A paint shop formerly occupied the area.
