The Iowa State Patrol says an 84-year-old Nebraska City man failed to yield to an oncoming train Friday. Robert Aksamit was killed as he drove across the tracks in southwest Iowa.
It happened just before noon at Dike Road and 225th Avenue, which is directly east of Nebraska City and close to Interstate 29.
Investigators say Aksamit was traveling east on Dike Road and crossed the tracks just as a northbound BNSF train came through. The train hit Aksamt’s 2010 Chevy S10 on the passenger side. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
