Any phone call from someone claiming to be with the police will catch your attention. But it may also cause you to let down your guard. That happened to a disabled Omaha man. Bob who is afraid to be identified said, "I can barely breathe.”
Its not a bad lung that took Bob's breath away last night but a phone message. Though somewhat mumbled the official tone is clear.
Bob says, ":When i heard the word police I instantly thought one of my family members were hurt."
Bob says he returned the call at first believing it came from police. Here is some of the recording "I'm Eddie calling with firefighters and police give us a call back at one 800..."
Calling back Bob answered questions like what is your last four social security digits and date of birth. .Bob says, " I gave the information up like a little baby handing it to its mother."
The real police warn don't give information to pretenders.
Officer Michael Pecha said, "They become a victim when they actually give out their information and that's used by a scam artist against them.if that happens please call police to file a report."
Fact finders called the caller's number and found its not the police
The caller says, "its a loan company."
With a failing lung bob worries he's already on borrowed time.Bob says, ':I am struggling every day just to live and now this guy puts stress on me."
