Phone Outage Hurts Business

Phone Service Interrupted:
· Approximately 40% of local Cox Business VoiceManager customers were impacted by yesterday's outage.
· The outage did not impact residential customers.
· The outage occurred when a network link was lost at approximately 10am yesterday. Service was restored by 8.30pm, CST


A localized phone outage causes major problems for some metro businesses. Cox Business service was interrupted Tuesday morning and as crews raced to fix the problem, some businesses lost out on business. Some were tallying up their losses.

This was an unusual outage. It would hit one business, but the place next door would still have Cox Business service.

All lines have been repaired and crews are carefully monitoring the situation. I the lines go dead again they can immediately start to fix the problem.

That's good news for Jay Axelrod. The Jimmy John's sandwich shop general manager says the phones at his restaurant were down most of the day Tuesday and without phones, "freaky fast" quickly becomes an order to another restaurant.

Axelrod knows the phone outage at his place cut into his profits. "Yes, you don't make it up, you just eat it."

The manager of the Mini Mart convenience store at 16th and Farnam says her cash register wasn't as full as it should have been on Tuesday. Many of the store's customers use cards to pay for their purchases, but with the phone lines down they either had to pay cash or go somewhere else.

"We lost quite a bit of business yesterday," said Andrea Zamora. "I had a lot of folks come in that could not use their card. We average, let me say, it cost us over $200 worth of business."

When they opened for business on Wednesday morning, things were back to normal at both businesses. For the Mini Mart, that means downtown employees spending a few dollars on their breaks and for Jimmy John's, that means orders coming in over the phone. It's a nice change from a less than profitable Tuesday.

"For this location, delivery, we lost a good 30 deliveries yesterday, which equates to $300 to $500, somewhere in there," said Axelrod. On Wednesday, the orders were being called in, sandwiches made and lunches being delivered.

A company spokesperson tells Channel 6 News that a monitoring system informed Cox Communications of the outage and technicians were immediately dispatched to repair the problem.
