A 63-year-old man has died apparently from a medical condition while participating in this year’s RAGBRAI bicycle ride across Iowa.
RAGBRAI Medical Director Bob Libby did not know the exact cause of death other than it was not from a traumatic injury. He says the man had a medical issue while riding on the route near Graettinger.
A trauma surgeon, nurse, critical care paramedic on a medical motorcycle, and a Care Ambulance that carries a nurse, paramedic, and physician tended to the man. He was taken to Pal Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg where he died.
The last death reported during RAGBRAI was four years ago when a rider collided with another cyclist and suffered a head injury.
