A partial evacuation ended at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue late Friday afternoon several hours after a suspicious package was detected in a commercial moving van at the Capehart Road Gate.
The package was deemed harmless. Base spokesman Ryan Hansen said the package was cleared by inspectors around 4:15 p.m. Hansen said he does not know what the packaged contained.
The vehicle was going through a routine check prior to entering the base around 11:45 a.m. when a K-9 military dog "hit" on the package. The Omaha Police Department Bomb Squad was called to the scene.
About 100 people were evacuated from three buildings near the gate while the package was inspected. All base personnel were later advised that the response was terminated and all restrictions were lifted. All personnel were cleared to return to their work centers if required.
The inbound Stratcom Gate remains closed. Outbound traffic is being allowed through. Myers Gate, Bellevue Gate and Kenney Gate are open.
