Governor Dave Heineman made history on Thursday when he appointed Stefanie Martinez to judgeship of County Court, 2nd Judicial District. She will be the first Latina judge in Nebraska history.
Since 2008, Martinez, 43, has served in several positions at the Sarpy County Attorney's Office.
She has served as a Drug Court Team Member, and the Senior Deputy County Attorney and Domestic Violence Coordinator. Martinez has also had a solo practice, and has served as an Administrative Hearing Officer for the State of Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles and as an Assistant Public Defender in the Douglas County Public Defender's Office.
Martinez earned her Juris Doctorate from New York Law School. She earned her Bachelors of Arts in Sociology and Spanish from Boston College. Martinez is fluent in Spanish.
The vacancy is due to Jeffrey J. Funke becoming a District Judge Second Judicial District in July 2013, having previously served as the County Court Judge. The Second Judicial District consists of Cass, Sarpy and Otoe Counties.
