The fruitcake fling proved to be a popular event at Ponca State Park's first Winterfest this weekend.
Park Superintendent Jeff Fields came up with the idea for the fruitcake toss because he's not a fan of fruitcakes. Fields says he figured tossing fruitcakes would be a good use for them. But competitors flung specially made fruitcakes with a bird seed filling, so they could be enjoyed by wildlife.
Jim LaPierre of Papillion won the competition for people older than 13. He says he didn't have much cake-throwing experience, but he got good distance after taking his gloves off.
