Papillion-La Vista School District Warning About Bed Bugs

The Papillion-La Vista school district has put out a warning for parents to watch out for bed bugs.

A representative tells us there are at least three confirmed cases of children bringing home bed bugs after staying overnight in cabins at a 4-H camp in Gretna.

It's was part of an outdoor education program for sixth graders.

Up to 10 more cases are being investigated.

Although bed bugs don't pose a medical or public health hazard, the district says they are taking extra precautions.

"So we're doing some things, preventive things already, but then, we'll certainly sit down and look at the whole procedure, and whole outdoor ed experience and say 'Are there things that we should do different?' In 30 years of doing this program, this is the first time we've ever experienced this," says Annette Eyman, of the Papillion-La Vista School District.

Two more schools in the district are still scheduled to sleep over at the camp next week.

The district says trained dogs found five cabins with bed bugs.

Those cabins will be avoided through the remainder of the program.
