Papillion La Vista Junior High School
Voters in the Papillion La Vista School District approved a $60 million dollar school bond last November for two new schools and renovations to four others.
With the start of school just two days away Channel 6 News went to check on the progress of the improvements.
Dr. Lydia Gabriel seems almost as excited as her students that the school year will start in just a few hours.
The principal's excitement is tempered by the knowledge that construction crews on site at Parkview Heights still has a lot of work to do but Dr. Gabriel is confident classrooms will be ready on Tuesday.
Dr. Lydia Gabriel says, "When I came in there wasn't any paint on the walls, the flooring was still concrete, actually some areas still had dirt floors so we've come a long, long way in two weeks."
Parkview Heights is one of four schools being renovated. It was built during the "open rooms" school concept but teachers soon learned there were too many distractions with the design.
Now Parkview has solid walls and doors and a new, safe, secure entrance.
Mason Wood appreciates all of the improvements; this year all three of the boys will be going to Parkview Heights. The family moved so they could walk to school.
But what Mason really likes is the commitment to education the voters have shown.
Mason Wood says, "It's a small community, we know all of our neighbors. The kids can run around and play and with the school renovations, it is always exciting to have stuff like that going on."
The classrooms are ready for the books and computers to be set up and the Parkview Panther will be in place when students return but some parts of the project will require more time.
Dr. Lydia Gabriel says, "There still may be some work going on but we're working with the construction company to minimize any disruption to the school day or the school calendar."
The new schools in the Papillion La Vista School District will be an elementary school at 123rd and Lincoln and a middle school at 108th and Lincoln.
All of the schools, new and renovated, will feature fiber connections and increased security.
