The driver and passenger injured Monday night when their truckload of cows tipped over on Interstate 29 in Council Bluffs are facing charges in Hutchinson, Kansas for repeatedly throwing a kitten against a wall until it died.
Police there say 24-year-old Bradlee Ellis and 20-year-old Emileigh Martens were upset that the 5-month-old yellow tabby kept "using the restroom inside,” so they took turns throwing the cat until it suffered a fatal head injury. They were arrested last week for animal cruelty. A conviction carries a sentence of 30 days to one year in jail and a fine of $500-$5,000.
Ellis and Martens remain hospitalized with serious injuries. Several cattle were killed and at least a dozen ran off when the semi overturned around 11 p.m. on southbound I-29 near the Avenue G exit.
The interstate was shut down in both directions for more than six hours while crews cleaned up the scene and searched for the remaining cattle. All but one was found.
