Overnight Break Ins Leave Several West Omaha Business Owners Wanting Answers

Frustration in West Omaha after several small businesses took a hard hit during the weekend. Four business between Fort and Maple, and 142th Street and 144th Street, were all broken into in a smash and grab crime spree.

Vanella Wrye owns Authentic Brazilian Wax, one of the businesses hit. She walks through her store assessing the damage Sunday morning.

"They broke into the register, probably with a tool because it is still damaged here," said Wrye. "Definitely a huge surprise, everybody sees West Omaha as being a safer place than other parts of town."

The crook grabbed rocks from outside and smashed a hole into her glass front door. It's a tactic the criminal used more than once. Just down the road, Cuppycakes was also hit. It's in the same strip mall that police were able to get surveillance video.

On top of the surveillance video, police found the criminal footprints throughout the bakery.

Owner Shari Preister is happy police made the discoveries, but is still dealing with mixed emotions over the crime.

"The other thing that I started feeling is really anger. Because I know I work really hard and so do the rest of the businesses around here," said Preister.

Many of the businesses are looking at thousands of dollars in damage, not to mention a mess to clean up.

"Things that bring you down also make you stronger," said Wrye.

Police are going through the evidence and surveillance video. But if you have any information on this crime, please call the Omaha Police anonymous tip line at 444-7867.
