Outlet Mall Traffic Studied

Impatient drivers are putting others at risk when they leave Nebraska Crossing Outlet Mall. Now the state is taking action.

Newly-installed warning candles are intended to stop island hopping.

One shopper said, “I saw somebody go out and they went up and over the median and turned south.”

Nebraska Crossing shoppers who leave by the old exit can't turn left to reach Interstate 80 so they have to go right.

Then comes a potentially dangerous decision. Do you turn left on Highway 6 or decide to make a U-turn? We found many drivers deciding to do the U.

State traffic counters found a third of the drivers in the left lane make a U-Turn. That's three times more than the typical Nebraska intersection. U-Turns are allowed but concerning to some drivers.

One shopper said, “People behind them, if they're not turning and making a u-ee, that can cause accidents.”

The state is studying U-Turns and other traffic trends at the busy intersection northwest of the outlet mall.

District Engineer Tim Weander said they want to know, what is the total number of vehicles turning? What are the numbers going through? Is it still a safe intersection or is there anything we need to modify?”

The district engineer says there would be fewer U-Turns if more drivers use the new street north of the mall and turn left at the light to reach I-80 but it will take more time and signs to turn around shoppers’ exit strategy.

The state provided signs that will guide shoppers to the exit on the north side of the mall so they can go left without a U-Turn. We're told those signs will be installed by early April if not sooner.
