Orange Covered Fire Hydrants

Drivers along 90th Street may have noticed something different next to the roadway.

Numerous fire hydrants are wrapped up in orange plastic.

That's due to the Metropolitan Utilities District clearing out a main line underneath 90th Street.

These hydrants are attached to a water main in 90th St. that was taken out of service.

The hydrants are bagged so the fire department knows they are not operable. The main was taken out of service for an inspection.

The project is expected to last about two weeks.

A spokesman with the Omaha Fire Department said hydrants in that part of town are 300 feet apart and that not all of the hydrants were taken out of service.

The spokesman assured Channel Six News that there was sufficient hydrant coverage in the area should the need arise.
