A woman facing charges in a metro police chase is back in jail. She’s accused of the same crime in another state. Brittany Gunter spoke with the woman’s family.
“The last four months we’ve been concerned about her and her mental health. She’s not a criminal, she just got scared,” said Donald Scott.
It’s been a tough time for Donald who has been worrying about his wife Dawn Scott. She’s a mother of three who didn’t have a record, until recently. “It was about four months ago and Dawn just walked in and she was like a different person.”
Her family says she had a mental breakdown with symptoms of paranoia and driving without telling anyone where she was going. Since then she’s had two run-in’s with the law, the first on December 26th.
Officers were called to Highway 75 and Chandler in Bellevue to a report of an erratic driver. They found a parked car on the shoulder. Inside was Dawn, and she took off. After a 90 minute chase through Bellevue and Omaha it all ended on 2nd Avenue in Council Bluffs. One of her tires went flat, she took off running, and officers were able to take her into custody. Dawn was released from jail on a $5,000 dollar bond.
Then on March 8th a similar situation, Dawn drove to Fort Morgan Colorado with her son inside an SUV. When deputies tried to pull her over she took off. Now she is behind bars there, this time under a $100,000 dollar bond. A bond her family can not afford.
Her family says they have been trying to get her the help she needs. “I hope this stops and she gets help. We all care about her and miss her,” said Donald.
Dawn was supposed to attend a hearing for her charges in Pottawattomie County on March 8th, but because she was in jail in Colorado she missed it.
She faces several charges in both incidents.
