We've all seen the signs that say “no shoes, no shirt, no service” but what if you couldn't afford shoes and had no choice but to walk barefoot? Tuesday, April 10th people around the world are choosing to go "A Day Without Shoes".
“It's just one of those things that people overlook,” said Open Door Mission Program Coordinator Charity Watts.
It's hard not to overlook the shoes on the rack at the Open Door Mission.
“Everyday those in homeless and poverty really have to think about those choices, just for our basic needs,” said Watts.
Not everyone has access to a pair of shoes.
“What would it be like to go one day without a basic need like shoes,” said Watts.
April 10th, Open Door Mission staff will go join thousands across the world and take part in "One Day Without Shoes.” It’s a worldwide event sponsored by TOMS shoes.
But how would people react in the community?
“That would be cool but I don't know how my job would take it so much, rolling in with no shoes on,” said Jennifer Schmid.
“I think it's great and I think that everything that TOMS does is wonderful, the money that they donate, the shoes that they donate,” said Georgia Welch-Cronin.
Back at Open Door Mission, going a day without shoes will serve as a sign of solidarity.
“It's a really great experience for you and your family and really your children to really show that some people, everyday, 365 days a year go without certain necessities,” said Watts.
