An Omaha man shot to death outside a bar Sunday morning has been identified as 29-year-old David Taplett.
It was a chaotic scene at the Stage II Lounge near North 30th Street and Bedford Avenue just before 2 a.m. Lexie Streeter and her friend were inside the bar at the time. “We heard the two gunshots and people started screaming and yelling, so everyone ran toward the front of the bar."
They left minutes later, but what they saw on the way out still haunts them. "When we looked over and saw the guy that we had just met who had been sitting with us for the past hour laid up against the building with his friend next to him and crying."
Streeter says Taplett had gone out to get some fresh air when the shooting happened. "I gave him a couple of mouth to mouth breaths and was about to start CPR compressions and that's when the police arrived at that point and one of the police officers pulled me up and said do not touch him."
Police say Taplett had already died when they arrived, but Streeter says she wanted the chance to revive him. Now after such a scary night, she must also mourn the loss of someone she just met. "It's just so horrible to think he was laughing and smiling and enjoying his life and now he doesn't have a life."
According to police, they do not have a policy regarding a citizen doing CPR at the scene.
