Omaha's Human Scalp Takes National Stage On Travel Channel
A piece of Omaha history will be getting some national attention on Thursday. All while on display right here in Omaha.
William Thompson's scalp has been the property of the Omaha public library for around 145 years.
Thompson, a railroad worker in the 1880's was attacked and scalped working outside of Omaha. He hopped train back to town, scalp in hand, hoping a local doctor could reattach it.
No such luck, and the doctor donated the scalp to the library. There it had remained, on display for quite some time at the W. Dale Clark branch downtown.

"For many years, the scalp was on display and school kids would make a pilgrimage to the library to see it and it has been quite awhile so it's nice for people to see it again and remember their childhood experiences of coming to the library," said director, Gary Wasdin.
After a while, it was taken off of display and preserved in a back room. But recently with the new found popularity it will be out for people to see in late November.
A crew from the Travel Channel Show, "Mysteries at the Museum" visited the metro in late July to reenact the story and show the remarkably preserved scalp.
They were in town to shoot a reenactment of William Thompson's plight and the scalp itself.
“To be a part of spreading the history of Douglas County, Nebraska nationally is an outstanding opportunity”, said Douglas County Historical Society Executive Director, Kathy Aultz. “We are thankful for the partnership we have formed with the “Mysteries at the Museum” production staff and are looking forward to watching the season 3 premiere!”.
The episode, William Thompson’s Scalp, will air as part of episode 1 of season 3 of “Mysteries at the Museum” on the Travel Channel, Thursday Nov 29th 8PM central time.
