Omaha officials say renovations to downtown's Gene Leahy Mall lagoon will soon begin.

Nearly $1.9 million will be spent on the project to address smelly, stagnant water in the lagoon, eroded stone retaining walls and shoreline erosion.

More than $500,000 for the project comes from the Nebraska Environmental Trust and another $100,000 comes from the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District.

The project will begin with installation of security fencing to ensure public safety. Once installed, the lagoon will be drained and construction can begin.

The work is expected to take six to eight months to complete, weather permitting.
