A 50-year-old Omaha man who embezzled more
than $59,000 from a homeowners association has been given two years of probation.
Prosecutors say Joe Akers took the money from the Mission Hills
Homeowners Association between 2003 and 2009. He'd been treasurer of the group.
Originally he was charged with theft by deception more than
$1,500. Court records say he pleaded no contest after prosecutors
lowered the charge to theft by deception of between $500 and
His attorney says Akers already has paid back the association nearly $58,500.
