The City of Omaha is declaring a snow emergency that will activate for the for first time new rules enacted last year by the city council. The snow emergency will go into effect at 12:01 Tuesday morning.
One of the important aspects of the snow emergency is that it puts into effect an "odd/even" parking scheme designed to get at least one of the streets clear so plows can move through.
On Tuesday, cars should be parked on the odd numbered side of the street since the date will be the 11th. City officials anticipate that the emergency will last into Wednesday so on Wednesday cars should be parked on the even side of the street since it will be the 12th.
The odd/even parking rules apply only to neighborhoods east of 72nd streets.
Officials are urging people who live in that area to share off-street parking with neighbors if at all possible. If your driveway will hold three cars and you've only got one, consider asking a couple of your neighbors if they'd like to park in your driveway in order to get the streets cleaned better and faster.
Cars that violate the snow emergency parking rules can be towed.
