"Omaha Purge" Leaks Nude Photos Of Students, Inspired By Movie

The premise of the movie, “Purge,” is that anything's legal for twenty four hours, including murder. Wednesday WOWT 6 News learned that now, teens are taking that plot and twisting it to leak nude photos of classmates. They are calling it the “Omaha Purge.”

“Unless you're on social media it's nothing you hear about,” said a 16-year-old Omaha teen.

She and another 16-year-old girl will be high school juniors this fall, and saw the “Omaha Purge” accounts. The girls sat down with WOWT 6 News to explain how it works, and how they want the illegal activity shut down.

They explained over the past week an Instagram account was created that is full of naked high school students from across the Heartland.

One teen explained how it works, by reading the directions on the Instagram account page. It reads: “The new Omaha Purge. You must shout out in order to follow, and I {the account manager} won’t accept until you do. We'll start posting at 10 pm nobody is safe.”

The girls said pictures are submitted by ex-boyfriends and girlfriends, or simply friends, who got the pictures when they were together or on “okay terms,” but have since broken up or stopped being friends.

All day the account accepts pictures and remains private. In order to gain access, you must first request to follow, then screenshot and shout out, by making a post that tells your followers to go follow as well. It is basically a form of built in advertisement that's resulted in thousands of followers. The account the girls saw, had nearly 3,000 followers.

“That’s how they get so popular in a few minutes – so fast,” the girls said.

From 10 p.m. to 12 a.m. pictures are posted and then deleted. It begins again the next day. “I knew one person on there. There were about 70 pictures and about 3,000 followers,” one teen explained. The other added, “Its awful to me its really disgusting that people are doing it.”

A concerned woman also reached out to WOWT 6 News, but did not want to go on camera. “It is child porn that’s why I felt bad looking at it,” she said.

The woman is in her twenties. She said her younger brother, who is in high school, showed her the account. She told WOWT 6 News she saw dozens of pictures, and hundreds of comments, tearing the girls apart.

“I’ve already heard the stories of girls killing themselves over bullying, and that was just high school bullying, like 'I don't like your glasses' this is 'here's your naked body lets exploit it and have a thousand people make fun of it tonight.'”

The account calls out the girls’ full names, shows their faces, and they are then ridiculed. All the women who spoke to WOWT 6 News said it's an epidemic that needs to be stopped now, before it is too late.

The girls explained the “Purge” accounts go beyond Omaha. Bellevue, Council Bluffs, Papillion, and other cities also have purge accounts starting up. They said this is why it may be hard to stop. On top of that, new accounts for each city are made daily, they said, and the old ones are deleted. This keeps the accounts from shutting down.

Omaha Police did not tell WOWT 6 News whether or not they are investigating.
