Omaha Police Officers Save Woman's Life

A woman is lucky to be alive after collapsing in a gas station parking lot from a heart attack. She credits two Omaha police officers for saving her life.

Officers Andrew Bensalah and Brian Schuster spend much of their day out patrolling in the southeast Omaha community. On March 27th it was business as usual when they stopped at Bucky’s gas station at 42nd and Grover, but then the unusual happened.

As they were leaving they were flagged down and told a woman had collapsed in the parking lot. “She had fainted and she wasn’t breathing. We tried checking for a pulse. We couldn’t find one,” said Bensalah.

The two called for help and immediately started CPR. It turns out 26-year-old Amy McAlexander had a mild heart attack. She was hospitalized in critical condition.

McAlexander said her mother died at a young age of a heart attack, so she feels lucky to be alive. “It feels like a miracle. It kind of feels like my mom was there and she helped me out somehow, said McAlexander. Not just divine intervention, but also the swift action of the officers. “I just want to say thank you and I really appreciate everything that they did for me,” said McAlexander.

The officers are thankful she is doing okay and happy they were there at the right time. “It’s an honor for us to be able to help out the public when we can,” said Bensalah. “It’s one of those things where we just happened to be there and it was good that we were and we were trained and did what we needed to do,” said Schuster.

Amy was taken to University of Nebraska Medical Center, but eventually released. Now she’s back in the hospital at Nebraska Methodist Hospital. Doctors say she has low potassium, but they are trying to figure out exactly what’s wrong.
