Officer Greg Hamill, a twelve year veteran of the Omaha Police Department, passed away on Wednesday from complications of H1N1.

"He was the type of guy when you met him, you learned something from him everyday and you felt like you were a better person for knowing him," said Officer Craig Wylie, who was Hamill's partner for two and a half years.

Wylie visited Hamill the day before he died at Methodist Hospital.

"I think in situations like this, remind me to always cherish the people around me, unexpected things happen everyday that are completely out of control of us or anybody," said Officer Wylie.

H1N1 is a strain of the influenza virus. Methodist infectious disease doctor, Rudolf Kotula, says H1N1 can easily be transmitted by being around a lot of people, and then have costly effects.

"The influenza virus can spread all over the body. It can affect your brain, it can affect your heart, it can affect your lungs and if you are say an older vulnerable adult, it can really take over," said Dr. Kotula.

Doctors say people of all ages should get vaccinated each year for the flu. The Center for Disease Control updates vaccinations annually to address new strains of the flu.

"A person can deteriorate quickly so the best way to prevent that is to be vaccinated," said Dr. Kotula.

Hamill is survived by his wife, Vanessa, and their two children.

A memorial fund has been set up at the Omaha Police Credit Union for Officer Hamill in care of Vanessa Hamill. The funeral will be at 10 a.m Tuesday, February 25th at Westside Baptist Church.
