In a press conference Tuesday afternoon Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer discussed the gun violence in recent weeks.
Mayor Jim Suttle, Councilman Ben Gray and Empowerment Network’s Willie Barney were also there.
As far as a plan of attack, Chief Schmaderer said, “We have made additions to the homicide unit, gang unit, and our cold case squad with the sold purpose of aggressively following up on these felony crimes.
Leaders also talked about their joint effort called Challenge 360. The goal is to get the community involved.
Willie Barney said, “We can not solve our issues with guns. We need to put the guns down and go into a mode and time of peace.” Barney also said, “Become a mentor, get out in the streets, do positive things. We are calling and challenging every single person in the community that now is the time to make a major transformation in our community.”
The Police Chief said they have seen progress in community members helping to solve crime. He says they hope to see even more in the future and that he strongly believes in community policing.
