Nebraska has never looked more different to a University of Nebraska graduate and Omaha native. Electrician’s Mate 3rd Class Jamie Gortman is working aboard one of the world's most advanced submarines.
After graduating from the University of Nebraska in 2009, Gortman joined the Navy.
“I always wanted to travel and see the world, so the Navy seemed like a good fit," says Gortman. He was thrilled to land on his state's namesake ship.
The USS Nebraska is currently in Bremerton, Washington, undergoing a major maintenance overhaul.
The sub measures 560 feet long, weighs more than 16,500 ton, and has a nuclear-powered propulsion system.
“It’s my number one priority day to day to help ensure Nebraska remains the best boat on the waterfront," says Gortman.
