Omaha Firefighter In Jeopardy

An Omaha firefighter was in Jeopardy this week and loved every minute of it. Nick Lemek was a contestant on one of television's longest-running game shows.

“The rest of my crew were getting upset because I was answering all the questions. If there's a question that pops up and 'Nebraska' is the category and I get it wrong, ugh."

WOWT 6 News went along with Nick and wife Kelcey to Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California for a behind-the-scenes look at the show.

“This is Jeopardy!” Announcer Johnny Gilbert warms up the audience while the contestants rehearse. How long does it take host Alex Trebek to get ready to hit the stage? “I get five games that we are going to shoot that day at 7:30 in the morning and I go over each of the games. It takes me an hour-and-a-half to do all five."

Alex has done more than 6,800 episodes and says he knows about 60 percent of the answers. “I used to know more of them to tell you the truth, but now we have more pop culture in there and I don't know as much.” His version of Jeopardy has been on since 1984 and has won 31 Emmys.

The show’s executive producer, Harry Friedman, is from Omaha. “I just don't think a kid could have asked for a better place to be from. This is a dream job."

And a dream for contestants like Nick, once they step onto the stage. “This is something that I never really dreamed was going to happen."

What does Alex like to do when he's not on stage? “When things break at the house, I fix them. I repair sprinklers, I drink chardonnay. I like to mellow out with a glass of chardonnay.”

We can't say how Nick did on the show just yet. His episode will air in April.
