Those not participating in the actual London Summer Games held their own event in Omaha Friday. The one thing they couldn’t do at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Scott Student Plaza is cure Olympic fever.
"I love the Olympics!"
National pride isn't held back by an ocean. "I got some medals, a whole bunch of them. I think I might just wear them all myself."
You didn’t need to be an elite athlete to participate in walking. “We made 42 'trips' to London. Each of you have averaged about 730,000 steps in total." For three months, pedometers recorded the more than 500 employees who took part.
“We're just like staying on land recording our things, but it was a way to get everybody up and moving this year,” said UNMC’s Bunny Washington. “It worked really good, everybody was happy to record their steps and realize they were just putting an extra step in there a day and that made them have a little bit more energy, inspire them to be a little bit better."
"Very special, very special, we're part of the winning team." These medals won't get them any endorsements, but their “trip” to London didn’t carry the jet lag either.
