A fight between two men in Omaha’s Old Market ended with one being stabbed and the other in police custody late Saturday afternoon. Police say the victim is not pressing charges and told officers he was the one who started the fight.
43-year-old Zed Whitney is expected to survive after he was stabbed in the abdomen.
Officers were called out on Saturday and found the former suspect, Tracy Finlan, walking away from the scene one direction and Whitney walking another.
According to police, Whitney was intoxicated an uncooperative when they approached him.
A witness tells Channel 6 News he watched the men exchange words before it quickly escalated into a physical altercation at 13th and Howard around 5:20 p.m.
“When you're somewhere so common during the day and even little kids could have been around watching football and then people start stabbing each other it really doesn't make you want to come back down here,” said Sizo Mhlanga.
Police say while they still are investigating just what happened, it appears that Finlan was defending himself and that Whitney started the fight. According to witnesses, Whitney was holding Finlan down at one point during the altercation.
