Offutt Air Show Canceled

This year’s air show at Offutt Air Force Base has been canceled. The Defenders of Freedom Open House and Air Show was scheduled for August 24 & 25.

Organizers blame budget uncertainties with the sequestration. The U.S. Air Force has been implementing actions to minimize impact to military readiness.

Col. John Rauch, 55th Wing Commander, said Wednesday, “The Department of Defense and the Air Force are facing difficult fiscal challenges, which requires us to make some tough decisions here at Offutt. One of those tough decisions includes canceling this year’s air show. We sincerely enjoy opening our gates to the public and appreciate the tremendous support we get from Bellevue, Omaha and the surrounding communities, but with the current guidance and fiscal restraints we can’t host an air show.”

The base doesn't have an exact amount yet on loss from sequestration.

It's still trying to figure how other departments could be affected.

Aside from the air show cancellation, the base also chose to fly locally 20% less in March.

The show has been held annually since 1972.

Offutt Air Force Base hopes it can find a way to hold the show again in 2014.

The Bellevue Chamber of Commerce says its expecting a significant financial impact with the loss of the show.
