Officers Of The Year Chosen

Police put their lives on the line every day getting a thank you in return sometimes.Today several officers got a little more, including lunch and a plaque for the annual Omaha police officer of the year awards.

An officer was honored for their police work each month of 2012. The award ceremony capped off with the announcement of the officer of the year. Add an “s” for 2012.

Five officers honored for a dramatic rescue of a man his mother and family dog from Carter Lake in late November. Their boat had capsized but Officer Kelly Murphy happened to be close by and saw the incident. She radioed for backup and all together five officers went in to save the family. The rescued man Nate Nelson was on hand to shake the officers' hands. Nate Nelson said, “I was in the water 10 minutes in an area you wouldn’t expect to see any officers or see help and they were there in seconds.”

Officer Murphy said, “I saw them in the water and knew they were in trouble. I got on the radio and called for help. I got a great crew and they came.”

The other officers of the year are Nick Andrews, Jacob Bettin,Mark Kiley and Bryant Wheatley. Channel Six Morning anchor Jim Siedlecki was master of ceremonies.
