OPS Reviews Athletics and Academics

The OPS Board of Education huddled in special session Wednesday to take another look at athletics and academics.

A new policy has already been passed regarding academic standards for athletes but the board now needs to find out how it will be implemented.

It will happen over three years. Starting with the freshman class of 2018, an athlete who has a failing grade in one or more classes or has a grade point average below a 2.0 would have to go through the academic coaching program.

Any student failing more than one course won't be eligible to participate in sports for one quarter. This policy applies to all NSAA-sanctioned activities including speech, debate, journalism, one-act plays and district music competitions.

They hope these changes will help improve grades and help with the transition from middle school to high school.
