Omaha Public Schools Interim Superintendent Dr. Virginia Moon has announced the appointments of eight new elementary principals for the 2013-2014 school year.
Nicole Lanum will serve as the next principal of Beals Elementary School at 48th and Center Street. Lanum began her teaching career as a high school Spanish teacher before serving as principal of Assumption-Guadalupe Catholic Grade School and Washington Elementary School in Fremont.
William Schmidt will serve as the next principal of Catlin Magnet Center near 132nd and W. Center. Schmidt has served many roles in more than a dozen years with the Omaha Public Schools, including 6th grade teacher and most recently assistant principal of Pawnee Elementary School.
Shelly Burghardt will serve as the next principal of Central Park Elementary at 42nd and Grand Avenue. Burghardt has more than 20 years of experience, all within the Omaha Public Schools. Her administrative experiences include an assistant principal position at King Elementary and her current placement as principal of Hartman Elementary.
Dan Hoeck will serve as the next principal of Florence Elementary at 36th and King Street. He has spent more than a decade in Omaha Public Schools, serving as a teacher and assistant wrestling coach at Central High School before serving as the principal at King Elementary School.
Dr. LeDonna York will serve as the next principal of Franklin Elementary at 35th and Franklin. York has taught numerous grade levels at Miller Park Elementary, served as an assistant principal for several years at Lothrop Magnet Center and Benson West Elementary, and has served as principal of Beals Elementary for the past six years.
Scott Sturgeon will serve as the next principal of Hartman Elementary at 66th and Hartman Avenue. Sturgeon started his work with schools in 1995 at the Masters Elementary Kids Club program. Sturgeon worked as an assistant principal at Dundee from 2007 to 2009 and then returned to Catlin Magnet Center in the fall of 2009 as the school principal.
Stephanie Black will serve as the next principal of King Elementary at 38th and Maple. She has worked in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and Nebraska as a classroom teacher, special education teacher, and guidance counselor. Black has served as principal of Florence Elementary School since 2009.
Decua Jean-Baptiste will serve as the next principal of Masters Elementary at 99th and Fort Street. Jean-Baptiste is a former Omaha Public Schools student. He attended Fontenelle Elementary, Springville Elementary, Nathan Hale Middle School and graduated from Northwest High School in 1989. Jean-Baptiste served in the Army National Guard and is a veteran of Desert Storm before beginning his teaching career at Adams Elementary. He currently serves as the principal of Franklin Elementary School.
