OPPD: Fort Calhoun Station Goes Offline Temporarily

According to an OPPD spokesperson, the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power plan was temporarily shut down just after noon on Monday.

The Fort Calhoun Station automatically shut down at 12:02 pm yesterday after the turbine took itself offline during routine maintenance on a part of the turbine-generator system in the non-nuclear side of the plant.

According to spokesperson Jeff Hanson, "All systems operated as designed, safely and without incident. The plant is designed to shut down automatically as a safety precaution in the event of conditions such as this one."

Fort Calhoun Station operators are investigating the cause of the shutdown and are working to resolve the problem and restore the unit to service.

There is no risk to the public and there are no injuries associated with the shutdown.

Hanson says the temporary shutdown is not expected to impact electrical service to homes and businesses in the region.
