The Omaha Police Department is warning of a scam that has become increasingly common in the metro.

Victims have reported getting phone calls from Mexico from people claiming to be a family member. In most cases, the caller claims to be in some sort of distress and asks the victim to send money to them in Mexico.

Several victims have filed reports with OPD, claiming to have sent thousands of dollars to the “family member," only to find out later that it was a scam.

Anyone who receives calls like this is reminded to not send money without verifying that the calling party is their family member. Those who do fall victim to this scam or any similar scam may call police at 402-444-4877 to make a report.
