OPD Priority One: Getting Guns Off The Streets

New Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer has made some key decisions to dedicate even more resources to getting guns off the streets. A big part of going after guns is centered on reducing gang violence.

Last year, officers seized 826 guns with 114 of them coming from gang members. Investigators consider it a victory every time they seize one, especially from gang members.

“There's a lot of intelligence we can get from those guns forensically with DNA and fingerprints and we're just looking at it from a lot of different avenues to get guns off the street and make an impact and hold individuals accountable who aren't supposed to have guns in their possession,” said OPD Lt. Ken Kanger of the Omaha Gang Unit.

Police have retrieved three of the 10 guns stolen a Council Bluffs pawn shop. All three were located in Omaha. Gang members targeted the guns and took nothing else. Two of the three suspected robbers have been arrested with one captured this week in Omaha near 28th and Hartman.

“It's definitely a priority with the chief of police that we attack violent crime and in conjunction with violent crime is firearms,” said Lt. Kanger.

What about the menacing firearm held by a robber in Bellevue Friday morning, a block from Omaha city limits. It looks similar to an Uzi or it could be an air gun. No matter, there's a stronger focus in Omaha to find the guns and get them away from the bad guys.

In March, a number of officers will be added to the Gang Unit and Firearms Squad to continue the push to reduce guns in conjunction with the ATF. Education is also a part of the strategy. There will be another Gun Amnesty Day on February 9th at Eagles's Nest Worship Center on Sorensen Parkway.
