OPD Gun Amnesty Takes In Guns, Ammunition

Omaha police were pleased with the number and types of weapons turned in during its gun amnesty program held Saturday.

Twenty-five guns were dropped off at the Eagles Nest Worship Center near North 56th Street and Sorensen Parkway, including one from a man who said he found the weapon under his son's bed and didn't want anything bad to happen.

Enough ammunition was given to officers to fill four, five-gallon buckets.

Since the gun amnesty program began in June 2010, 350 weapons have been turned in to police. The goal of the program is to remove as many illegal and unwanted weapons off the streets.
