Omaha firefighters credit a newspaper carrier with keeping a fire from causing much more damage.
Just before 6 a.m. Saturday fire crews were called to a vacant home near 50th Street and Northwest Radial Highway. Firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the home, and lots of flames inside. Several searches confirmed that no one was trapped inside. The fire was knocked down in about ten minutes.
Firefighters say the damage could have been much worse. Omaha Fire Battalion Chief Matt Carmichael says, "A very observing person happened to see that. So we're pretty lucky. Otherwise, I mean eventually we would have been there and got it, but a lot less damage was caused because they saw the smoke and saw flames through the window, and got us here."
No one was reported hurt.
