After months of anticipation the new Walmart in North Omaha is now officially open. The store is hoping to have a strong economic impact on the area.
The Walmart is located at 50th and Ames. Many customers like Shanelle Smith packed into the store, excited to check it out. "I like it. It's closer to my house, so I don't have to travel way out there to get to Wamart," said Smith.
Customers can grocery shop or buy anything, from toys to home goods. Customers aren't the only ones that are thrilled, so are jobseekers in the area.
Dennis Smith had been looking for a job for months. "Just recently unemployed due to the closing of a plant and I had some manager and supervisor experience."
When he heard about the opportunity at Walmart, he applied and got the job. "They are giving you opportunities to learn and work, so it's a great opportunity," said Smith.
Store Manager, Todd Kjosen, said they have already hired over 300 people, but they are still looking. They have positions available such as cashiers, overnight stockers, and some leadership positions. If you are interested you can go into the store and fill out an application at their hiring center kiosk.
"That's what's been exciting is us coming to North Omaha has put 300 jobs in a community that really needed it and the response has been overwhelming," said Kjosen.
Many in the community are hoping other retailers will also open nearby and the community will see economic growth.
Another Walmart also opened in the area of 90th and Lake.
