The Omaha Public School Board has named a new school after a Tuskegee Airman who was born in Omaha. Alfonza W. Davis Middle School will open in the fall of 2013 at 132nd and State Street.
Davis was born in Omaha in 1919. He graduated first in his class from Technical High School in 1937. During World War II, he became the first African American from Omaha to earn his wings at Tuskegee Airfield in Alabama.
He eventually became attached to the 332d Fighter Group, an all African American unit known as the “Red Tail” group because of its specially painted design on its aircraft.
According to the website togetherweserved.com, Davis disappeared while on a recon mission on October 29, 1944. He was declared dead a year later. His remains were never found.
