A new report shows more Iowa schools are failing to meet federal performance standards.

The report released Friday says the number of schools that fell below the standards jumped by 55 percent this year.

Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass said that the increase was due to new, tougher statewide assessments that caused a drop in test scores. Glass also says a federal No Child Left Behind formula does not adequately consider year-to-year progress.

The number of Iowa schools that missed annual performance targets rose to 800 out of 1,381 schools statewide. Schools that missed goals for two consecutive years increased by nearly 20 percent.
