New Projects Give Sarpy County A Boost

Two major redevelopment projects are coming to Sarpy County, one at Offutt Air Force Base and the other west of Papillion. The projects are a sign of continued economic growth.

Friday's groundbreaking marked the ceremonial start of construction on StratCom’s new headquarters. On a tract of land that was once a nine-hole golf course, the new $524 million building will house the Strategic Command's command and control facility.

The economic effects of the project will be felt on and off the base. “This is about a $2 billion, at the present time, boost to the economy in this area,” said Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson. “Nebraska and western Iowa, so there are already economic benefits we receive. I think they just continue to expand.”

Just west of Papillion, another multi-million dollar project is on the way at 114th and Cornhusker, where workers are moving dirt and preparing roads for a new data center for Fidelity Investments. The $200 million project will bring in 30 to 35 new jobs.

Josh Galvin, owner of Beyond Golf Sports and Spirits at 120th and Giles, believes the project will boost business. “It brings a lot of construction to the area, which brings construction workers, it brings people for lunch in the area, things like that, so it definitely will help.” He also hopes this project is only the beginning. “With that Fidelity data center, hopefully that is the beginning of something that is going to be bringing on a lot more development in the area.”

The new StratCom headquarters will add about one million square feet to the base. The project is expected to be finished by September 2016.
