On October 8, 2012, the Center for Rural Affairs will release a new report entitled, New Medicaid Initiative in Nebraska: The Rural Implications.

The analysis examines the fiscal and economic impacts - additional revenue provided to the state, jobs created and costs to consumers of uncompensated care without expansion - of the state’s potential participation in the expansion of Medicaid as provided for in the Affordable Care Act.

And the report concludes that significant implications for Nebraska’s small towns and rural residents underlie the decision of whether the state will participate in expanding Medicaid coverage.

“The new Medicaid initiative is critical for rural Nebraska,” said Jon Bailey, Rural Research Director at the Center for Rural Affairs and author of the report. “Too many hard-working Nebraskans can’t afford health care coverage for themselves or their children, and that lack of coverage has become an additional burden for their neighbors and the health care system.”

Bailey added that failing to implement the new Medicaid initiative will create a coverage crater in Nebraska into which too many hard-working Nebraskans and their families will fall.

Opting to implement the new Medicaid initiative in Nebraska means hard-working people will get the the security of affordable health care so they can start new businesses, not fear the loss of a job, and ensure that their kids can thrive and be successful.
