The number of new flu cases is declining but the Iowa Department of Public Health says influenza activity in Iowa remains widespread.

There were 89 new cases of seasonal influenza in Iowa during the week of Jan. 13 through 19, compared to 120 the week before.

The percentage of all outpatient visits that were for influenza-like illness declined for the second straight week, with 3 percent compared to 3.6 percent the week ending Jan. 12.

The number of flu-related hospitalizations also decreased.

However, almost four percent of school absences were due to illness compared with 2.8 percent the previous week.

During the same week a year ago, influenza activity in Iowa was considered sporadic, with just 16 positive tests for flu.
