Omaha residents may soon no longer need change to plug the parking meters downtown. Mayor Jim Suttle has asked the City Council to approve an order for the purchase of 400 credit card enabled single space parking meters.
The meters are expected to be installed in various locations by December 2013. The new meters will accept both credit cards and coins.
“The new credit card parking meters will not only improve the parking experience for Omaha residents and visitors, but will also increase parking efficiency and reduce City operating expenses. It is my hope the City Council acts today to approve the purchase order,” said Mayor Suttle.
In November 2012, the City of Omaha hired a parking manager to oversee the consolidation of parking operations. According to the Mayor's Office, the consolidation is expected to reduce taxpayer costs by $1.2 million over the next two to three years and will improve parking availability for Omaha residents.
