Neighbors of a local bar are upset the city is letting them build a beer garden near where they live.
Tuesday afternoon, he Omaha City Council voted 6-1 to allow Redneck's Bar to start building a beer garden about 20 yards from where a number of people live.
Karolyn and Frank Gappa have owned the fourplex apartments right behind the Westgate Plaza since 1986. They and other apartment owners say it's been difficult lately because of Redneck's Bar.
"We've lost tenants because when they dump the trash, they're getting woken up in the middle of the night,” Karolyn explained. "It's just kind of a free-for-all out here at night when the bar gets out, but now they're going to be here all night."
"I'm just numb right now, i just thought we'd have a chance but the city council seemed like they had their mind made up," Frank described.
Redneck's will build a 24 x 24 foot area for patrons to smoke. People previously had to go out front if they wanted a cigarette. The owners of Redneck's say they'll work with neighbors to take care of any noise issues they can fix.
"Our intention is not to put music back there, our intention is not to make it bad for them to sleep. Actually there will be a 6 foot high wall, solid wood fence which I think will buffer some of the sound," the owners explained to the Omaha City Council on Tuesday.
Gappa worries that the fence won't help stop the noise, and that more of her tenants may be looking to move out.
"I’m just sick because if we can't rent it how are we going to sell it? I’m sick," Karolyn noted.
Redneck's says they have support from their neighboring businesses in Westgate Plaza.
