Neighborhood Eyesore Will Soon Be Demolished

For years an Omaha neighborhood has been dealing with a big eyesore, but now the city has plans to change that.

The area is at 31st and Paxton. It’s the former Gunderson rail property. The business has been closed for a while, but the buildings remain.

Howard Jones lives right across the street from the property. Jones said, “All you see is a bunch of run down buildings and broken land.” Jones has lived there for more than 40 years. He remembers when the rail company was open. He also remembers when it closed and now he has a constant reminder of what was left behind. “It’s been an eyesore, really,” said Jones.

Jones was happy when he heard the buildings would be demolished. “All I could think about is that it is going to be an improvement for the neighborhood.”

Workers are already out at the site, prepping for the demolition. Tim Heanue said, “When we are done it will be completely flat, down to dirt.” He said all of the buildings will be taken down. The steel, concrete and asphalt will be recycled. Then the ground will be graded and seeded to create a green space. “It will be more eye-appealing,” said Heanue.

The plan is then to construct tunnels on the land in 2015 as part of the citywide storm water conveyance sewer project.

As for neighbors, they can expect some loud construction noise over the next few weeks. Jones said it’s worth it.
